Today's topic...Dreamgirls.

I went to go see it on Saturday and I have to say that it was not a waste of my time.
Spoiler Alert
The movie starts out with a bit of a montage of blue lights, snatches of song, and an announcers voice who...um..announcing singing groups for a contest.  There are a few and then we get to what you want to see, the girls, or the Dreamettes, the leader, Effie, and the backup singers, Deena and Lorrell.  They sing their hearts out for naught since they lose the compeition.  All isn't lost, however.  They are discovered by a manager by the name of Curtis Taylor Jr. and from there, their popularity skyrockets.  Things don't stay great.  Curtis replaces Effie with Deena, both as the new lead and in his love life.  She is kicked out of the group later.  Lorrell has an affair with a singer, Jimmy Early, that the Dreamettes used to sing backup for on the road and Deena is locked into her contract with Curtis and can't pursue acting.  To make this short, things are all rectifed by the end of the story.

Jennifer Hudson deserves every scrap of recognition that she has gotten.  She can sing, period.  I don't know why she didn't win American Idol, but maybe that was good for her.  She would have never gotten this part.  After "And You're Gonna Love Me" there was applause in theatre.  There weren't many of us, but it was there.  I can't wait to see her in more stuff.  Everybody else is great as well, I don't see how Jamie Foxx didn't get at least a nod.  Eddie Murphy was great, but still.

At any rate, go check it out.  It's gotta be better than Alpha Dog.
